Significant Words and Comments: Commentary on Revelation 21:19-20a expansion (19 August 2008): The First Foundation Stone “The first foundation was jasper,” representing the first commandment [“Thou shalt have no other elohims before Me.” Exodus 20:3], therefore identifying the jasper [G2393] stone as representing singularity to Yehuveh. The corresponding Hebrew-translated stone from the breast-pocket is sardius [H1024: 'odem, “redness,” that is, the ruby, garnet, or some other red gem]. (24 August 2008) All corresponding references from Torah include: Job 28:18: “The price of wisdom is above rubies [sardius].” The exchanges we make of old thoughts and habits to attain Yehuveh’s wisdom will always be made on the basis [above, on top of, over] of our full surrender to Him. But once this foundation is established, we must build on it with wisdom! Proverbs 3:13-15; 8:11: “Wisdom . . . is more precious than rubies [sardius]: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.” “For wisdom is better than rubies [sardius]; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” Wisdom is knowing how to live our lives effectively and profitably, and while we cannot gain this wisdom without the established foundation of full surrender to Yehuveh, it is clear that this full surrender is only the first step and will not satisfy our needs unless we seek and move on to embrace Yehuveh’s full instructions. Proverbs 20:15: “There is gold, and a multitude of rubies [sardius]: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.” There is Yehuveh’s instruction, and a multitude of surrenders as we learn new truths. We will treasure the teachers who provide us this instruction. Proverbs 31:10; Lamentations 4:7: So exalted is the uplifting of surrender-based wisdom that Solomon applies it to describe the highest refinement of human relationships: “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies [sardius].” Like wisdom, a spouse who makes good decisions and blesses every member of the family is indeed invaluable to a happy life. Jeremiah carries the same illustration to describe the exaltation of those who separate themselves to Yehuveh: “Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies [sardius], their polishing was of sapphire.” The message throughout these verses is consistent: while singularity to Yehuveh is the first foundation of a relationship with Him and of an effectively ordered life, wisdom [knowing how to apply and live Yehuveh’s instructions] is exceedingly more valuable when this first foundation is securely in place. Revelation 4:3, in describing the Lamb-king, states: “He that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone.” This appointed global leader is so fully surrendered to Yehuveh that he will consistently present Yehuveh’s instruction and wisdom to everyone under his guidance.
