Significant Words and Comments: Commentary on Revelation 21:17 expansion (18 August 2008): Commandment or Structure #12: “Thou shalt not covet . . . anything that is thy neighbor’s.” Detail #12:10: Violence and violent theft are driven by covetousness. “But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.” “They covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.” Most violence is motivated by the strong desire for something someone else has, whether that be objects, position, relationship, or opportunity. Without covetousness most violent crime would cease. Thus, by placing this boundary around His people, Yehuveh protects them and uplifts them at the same time. Jeremiah 22:17; Micah 2:2. Also: Exodus 18:21; Psalms 10:3; Ezekiel 7:11, 23; Micah 6:12; Zephaniah 1:9; 3:4. Detail #12:11: Covetousness motivates the killing of innocent people. Along with oppression and violence comes the killing of innocent people: “Thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.” Yehuveh would have just the opposite: “Thus saith Yehuveh; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.” Physical death is not the only form of life-taking, either. Innocent people are used up and their time and talents wasted by those in positions of power and influence through low-wage employment, enslavement, imprisonment, taxation, inflation, and many other devices. Yehuveh opposed every such expression of covetous oppression which takes away the nobility and dignity He intended for every man’s life. Jeremiah 22:17, 3. Also: Jeremiah 26:22-24; 1 Kings 21:19; 2 Kings 24:4; 2 Chronicles 36:8; Ezekiel 19:6; Zephaniah 3:3. Detail #12:12: Covetousness leads to every form of wrong conduct. “For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart.” Iniquity is an encompassing word describing every form of wickedness, evil, sin, vice, injustice, and crime. Knowing how extensive the evil is which is wrought in strong passion, Yehuveh set a strong boundary against every manifestation of corrupt covetousness. Had this commandment been heeded, what a different world we would now live in. Let the restoration begin with us. Search your heart for every unrighteous passion and in Yehuveh’s strength and by His instruction, cast it away! Isaiah 57:17. Also: Isaiah 5:8, 9; 56:11; Jeremiah 6:13; 8:10; 22:17; Ezekiel 33:31; Micah 2:2, 3.
