Significant Words and Comments: Commentary on Revelation 21:14 continued (20 July 2008): Structure #1: “Thou shalt have no other elohims before Me.” Exodus 20:3; Deuteronomy 5:7. Significance continued: (1) No other elohim is like Yehuveh. Repeatedly Torah speaks of Yehuveh’s incomparable qualities: “Among the elohims there is none like unto Thee, O Yehuveh; neither are there any works like unto Thy works. All nations whom Thou hast made shall come and worship before Thee, O Yehuveh; and shall glorify Thy name. For Thou art great, and doest wondrous things: Thou art Elohim alone.” “For who in the heaven can be compared unto Yehuveh? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto Yehuveh? Elohim is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about Him. O Yehuveh Elohim of hosts, who is a strong Yehuveh like unto Thee? or to Thy faithfulness round about Thee? Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, Thou stillest them. . . . Thou hast scattered Thine enemies with Thy strong arm. The heavens are Thine, the earth also is Thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, Thou hast founded them.” Psalms 86:8-10; 89:6-11 [also: Deuteronomy 3:24; 33:26; 1 Samuel 2:2; 2 Samuel 7:22; 1 Kings 8:23; Psalms 35:10; 77:19; Isaiah 40:18, 25; Jeremiah 10:6, 16; 49:19]. (2) Yehuveh created us and all around us: “For Yehuveh is a great Elohim, and a great King above all elohims. In His hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is His also. The sea is His, and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before Yehuveh our maker.” “In the beginning Elohim created the heaven and the earth.” Psalms 95:3-6 [also Job 35:10; Psalms 100:3; Ecclesiastes 12:1; Isaiah 54:5]; Genesis 1:1 [also Exodus 20:11; 31:17; 1 Chronicles 16:26; Nehemiah 9:6; Job 26:13; 38:4; Psalms 8:3; 33:6, 9; 89:11, 12; 96:5; 102:25; 104:24, 30; 115:15; 121:2; 124:8; 134:3; 136:5; 146:6; 148:4, 5; Proverbs 3:19; 8:22-30; Ecclesiastes 12:1; Isaiah 37:16; 40:26, 28; 42:5; 44:24; 45:18; 51:13, 16; 65:17; Jeremiah 10:12; 32:17; 51:15; Zechariah 12:1]. (3) Covenant relationship with Yehuveh established a totally different reason for worshipping Him, serving Him, and yielding to His instruction, from that of the people who serve their elohims out of fear or coercion: “Know therefore that Yehuveh thy Elohim, He is Elohim, the faithful Elohim, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations.” “Yehuveh Elohim of Israel, there is no Elohim like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with Thy servants that walk before Thee with all their heart.” Deuteronomy 7:9; 1 Kings 8:23 [also Deuteronomy 7:9; Nehemiah 1:5; 9:32; Psalms 89:3-5; Daniel 9:4; Micah 7:19, 20].
