Significant Words and Comments: Commentary on Revelation 20:1 (10 July 2008): “I saw an angel come down from heaven,” is, “Yehuveh’s anointed instructors watched another message come from Yehuveh’s protection.” Regarding angel, see Revelation 1:1; come down, Revelation 3:12; 12:12; heaven, Revelation 4:1. “Having the key of the bottomless pit,” that is, “having the power and authority to change the utter depravity which has resulted from rejection of and rebellion against Yehuveh’s instruction.” Key, from kleis [G2807], describes both a means of unlocking something and stands as a symbol of power and authority over something and is used only four times in Revelation [1:18; 3:7; 9:1; 20:1]. “The key of the bottomless pit” is fully discussion by Revelation 9:1. “A great chain in his hand,” shows that this message has full authority over and ability to constrain human depravation and corruption. Chain, from halusis [G0254], meaning “any form of chain or bond by which the body or any part of it is bound,” is used only here in Revelation. Hand, having possession of, is discussed in notes on Revelation 6:5. Since shortly after the flood in Noah’s time, with the perversity initiated by Nimrod, corruption has blossomed and flourished. With each new development, humanity has become more and more debased, for compromise and rebellion have no limit, except when Yehuveh Himself sets the boundary. Time and again He has done that, as discussed in the notes on Revelation 13:1, but this time He will go beyond curbing the further development of evil. This time He is bringing evil, and all who love it, to a complete end. “Yehuveh . . .will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.” Nahum 1:9. “Yehuveh bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: He maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of Yehuveh standeth for ever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations.” “There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against Yehuveh.” “For the king trusteth in Yehuveh, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved. Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee. Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: Yehuveh shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them. Their fruit shalt Thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men. For they intended evil against Thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.” “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yehuveh, and against His anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: Yehuveh shall have them in derision.” “Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.” Psalms 33:10-11; Proverbs 21:30; Psalms 21:7-11; 2:1-4; Isaiah 8:9.
