Significant Words and Comments:
Call to Repentance: Commentary on Zechariah 1:1-6 (26 December 2007): A week after the Fall Rehearsals (Feasts, Festivals) end, Yehuveh again brings a very strong appeal to His people for repentance and returning to His ways. The summer has been drought-dry and the food situation is bleak; from the prophecies we know a mighty shaking is very near, that our whole world is about to change and Yehuveh appeals to His people to repent and fully return to Him. Yehuveh told Ezekiel: “Prophesy unto the wind . . . Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” All this tumult—the four winds of heaven: war, famine, disease, oppression—which are soon to break upon the earth will awaken us and bring us to Yehuveh again as nothing else can. Ezekiel 37:9; Ezekiel 14:21; Zechariah 6:5.
Historical Events: The second Year of Returning (Darius) spans 30 March 2006 to 19 March 2007. The eighth month spans 24 October to 21 November 2006. During this month Yehuveh appeals to His scattered people to return to His ways. This prophecy applies to both the nation of Israel now in Palestine and the rest of Jacob’s descendents who are still “scattered among the nations.” Joel 3:2 [compare Deuteronomy 30:3; Isaiah 33:3; Jeremiah 30:11; 31:10; Ezekiel 6:8; Habakkuk 3:6; Zechariah 7:14].
Significant Words: 1:1 (9 November 2008):
In is the prefix bet which is used as a conjunction meaning in or at. Month is from chodesh [H2320], meaning “the new moon; by implication, a month.” Chodesh is used only five times in Zechariah [1:1, 7 (twice); 7:1, 3], all in reference to specific dates for the events presented, and all in the second and fourth Years of Returning (Darius).
Eighth is from shemiyniy [H8066] and used only here in Zechariah. The eighth month of the second Year of Returning (Darius) spans 24 October to 21 November 2006. The communication of Zechariah 1:1-6 is given for this month.
Second is from shenayim [H8147], meaning “two; also twofold.” This is the first of twelve uses of shenayim in Zechariah [1:1, 7; 4:3, 11, 12 (twice), 14; 5:9; 6:1, 13; 11:7; 13:8].
Year is from shaneh [H8141], meaning “a year (as a revolution of time),” as discussed in notes on Daniel 11:1 and in greater detail in notes on Revelation 20:2. Shaneh is used eight times in Zechariah [1:1, 7, 12; 7:1, 3, 5; 14:16 (twice)].
Darius [H1867] means “returning to original purity” as discussed in notes on Daniel 11:1. As noted above, the second Year of Returning (Darius) spans 30 March 2006 to 19 March 2007. Much of the activities of the first chapters of Zechariah and all of Haggai take place in this year. Darius is used three times in Zechariah [1:1, 7; 7:1].
