Commentary on Ezekiel 9:5-11 |

9:5 And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: 9:6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house. 9:7 And he said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city. 9:8 And it came to pass, while they were slaying them, and I was left, that I fell upon my face, and cried, and said, Ah Yehuveh Elohim! wilt thou destroy all the residue of Israel in thy pouring out of thy fury upon Jerusalem? 9:9 Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, Yehuveh hath forsaken the earth, and Yehuveh seeth not. 9:10 And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head. 9:11 And, behold, the man clothed with linen, which had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me. |

Commentary on 9:5-7 [24 September 2007]: “To the others He said in mine hearing, Go ye after them through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man who has been distinguished [by rejecting the abominations of Ezekiel 8 and embracing the truths of Ezekiel 9:2]; and begin at My sanctuary. Then they began at the leaders of the house [nation of Israel].” Yehuveh’s “sanctuary,” consecrated place, city selected, is His “chosen Jerusalem.” Zechariah 3:2 [also 1 Kings 11:36 “Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen Me to put My name there.” 2 Kings 21:7; 23:27; 2 Chronicles 12:13; 33:7]. “And He said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city.” Sobering commission! Commentary on 9:8-10 [24 September 2007]: Only those who have witnessed carnage of their own families and friends can comprehend Ezekiel’s horror at this revelation. In anguish he appeals to Yehuveh, “Ah Yehuveh Elohim! wilt Thou destroy all the rest of Israel in pouring out Thy fury upon Jerusalem?” Repeating the explanations of the past four chapters, Yehuveh reminds Ezekiel that He must “recompense their way upon their head. ” Commentary on 9:11 [24 September 2007]: “The united people separated by marking the full cycles of the moon in elevated celebration, reported the matter, saying, We have done as Thou hast commanded us.” These people have not only appealed to the minds of all who “sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst” of Jerusalem, but in every way they have “done as Thou hast commanded us.” They have become like Yehuveh’s “servant David, who kept My commandments, and who followed Me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in Mine eyes.” 1 Kings 14:8.
