Daniel 12:8-10, Page 1

Re-evaluation Translation:
Daniel 12:8  And I heard, but I understood not: then I said, O my Sovereign, what will be the outcome of these things?
Daniel 12:9  And he said, Let it go, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
Daniel 12:10  Many will be purified, and made white, and tried; but the rebellious will continue rebelling: and none of the rebels will understand; but the wise will understand.

Bible, KJV Translation:
Daniel 12:8  And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?
Daniel 12:9  And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
Daniel 12:10  Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

Significant Words and Comments:

Commentary on Daniel 12:8-10 (1 August 2009):  “And I heard, but I understood not,” shows an honesty in Daniel which has been rarely matched in commentators since. Yehuveh was very clear with Daniel, that the information he recorded was sealed until its time of fulfillment, and though Daniel faithfully recorded what he was given, even he could not penetrate this mystery. Earlier, “in the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, . . . and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision,” but now Yehuveh has gone beyond what even Daniel can comprehend. Earlier Gabriel had told Daniel, “Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days,” but this time he is simply told to wait. Until the seal is opened in “the time of the end,” this mystery cannot be rightly known, even by the wise. What a privilege is ours! The time is now and we are to understand this mystery which was written for us! Daniel 10:1, 14.

Daniel 12:8 is the only verse in Scriptures where a righteous prophet clearly presented information which he could not himself comprehend. Every other reference to not understanding had to do with rebellion and rejection of righteous information, and with the confusion of language resulting from these [see Genesis 11:7; Deuteronomy 28:49; 29:4; 32:28, 29; Job 42:3; Psalms 81:5; 106:7; Proverbs 1:22; Isaiah 33:19; 44:18; Ezekiel 3:6; Hosea 4:14].

“Then said I, O my Lord [sovereign, controller (not Yehuveh here)], what shall be the end of these things?” Yehuveh does not answer Daniel this time, but rather tells him to let the matter alone, that it cannot be explained to him or to anyone else until it is fulfilled. Yehuveh answered Habakkuk in a similar manner, telling him “the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” Likewise, if we do not understand the prophecies we read, we must pray earnestly for the needed insights, but at the same time we must accept that when we need to know these things, Yehuveh will make them plain to us, and until then we wait. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Habakkuk 2:3; Ecclesiastes 3:1.

“And he said, Go thy way, Daniel,” in a gentle dismissal which Yehuveh repeats again in Daniel 12:13. Daniel understood so much and it was most difficult for him to come up to the “end of the story” and not understand the final chapter. Nevertheless, only experience could possibly give him the needed insights and the time had not yet come for anyone to have this experience. Gently yet firmly Yehuveh tells Daniel, “Let it go for now,” and then explains, “for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.” No amount of discussion could possibly explain the developments which humanity has achieved in recent years. Only now can the words Daniel recorded make sense to anyone!
