Significant Words and Comments: Commentary on Daniel 11:5 (2 November 2007): Daniel now introduces a third player in the drama unfolding in this chapter, the radical Islamist Organization, al Qaeda, ultimately developed with the long-range goal of carrying on a global jihad (war motivated by their religious convictions) and establishing a Wahhabi Caliphate [the Islamic version of the “One World Order”] across the world. Already familiar across the globe, Al Qaeda rose to distinguished prominence in 2005 by opening As-Sahab, a media production house, which permitted it to effectively franchise its ideologies and operations around the world through supplying training materials to cell groups. Because al Qaeda has become so widespread and diverse since 2005, various journalists errantly describe it as “fragmented.” Hardly! Connected yet essentially decentralized, al Qaeda has simply became a global entity which is now nearly impossible to combat or destroy. Though al Qaeda was initially organized much earlier in 1988-1989 by Osama bin Laden and Abdullah Yusuf Azzam, by the decided turn in conduct and organizaiton in 2005, it took its place in the closing drama in the first Year of Returning (Darius). Few realize the absolute power wielded by this group, nor the purposes they are accomplishing. Following the destruction of the World Trade Towers on 11 September 2001, the name al Qaeda became emphatically more frequent in the media. This event brought it promitently to the forefront in world awareness, yet it was another three and a half years before this group emerged into dramatic global dominance. According to Abdel Bari Atwan [in his book “The Secret History of Al Qaeda,” p. 221-236, University of California Press, 2006. ISBN 0-520-24974-7], it was on 11 March 2005 [one month before the beginning of the first Year of Returning (Darius)] that Al-Quds Al-Arabi published extracts from Saif al-Adel’s document “Al Qaeda’s Strategy to the Year 2020.” This material, which had originated long before that date, was made broadly public at that time. Abdel Bari Atwan summarizes this strategy as comprising five stages to rid the ummah [the Arab world] from all forms of oppression: 1. Provoke the United States into invading a Muslim country. [Accomplished with the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.] 2. Incite local resistance to occupying forces. 3. Expand the conflict to neighboring countries, and engage the U.S. in a long war of attrition. 4. Convert al-Qaeda into an ideology and set of operating principles that can be loosely franchised in other countries without requiring direct command and control, and via these franchises incite attacks against countries allied with the U.S. until they withdraw from the conflict, as happened with the 2004 Madrid train bombings, but which did not have the same effect with the 7 July 2005 London bombings.
