Commentary on the
Book of Enoch, Chapter 16:1-4.

Text

16:1  From the days of the slaughter and destruction and death of the giants, from the souls of
whose flesh the spirits, having gone forth, shall destroy without incurring judgment—thus
shall they destroy until the day of the consummation, the great judgment in which the age
shall be consummated, over the Watchers and the godless, yea, shall be wholly consummated.”
16:2  And now as to the Watchers who have sent thee to intercede for them, who had been
          aforetime in heaven
(say to them):
16:3  “You have been in heaven, but all the mysteries had not yet been revealed to you, and
you knew worthless ones, and these in the hardness of your hearts you have made known
to the women, and through these mysteries women and men work much evil on earth.”
16:4  Say to them therefore: “You have no peace.”’
Commentary

16:1 The Book of Jubilees V:8-10 provides the same picture with these details: “He [Yehuveh] sent into their midst His sword that each should slay his neighbor; and they began to slay one the other until they all fell upon the sword and were destroyed from the earth. And their fatheres witnessed it; and after this these were bound in the depths of the earth, until the day of the great judgment for the coming of punishment until eternity over all those who have corrupted their ways and their works before Yehuveh. And He destroyed all their places, and there was not left a single one of them who was not judged according to all their wickedness.”

16:3 The mysteries which have been revealed to men include knowledge of destructive nuclear [and perhaps biological] materials, which interestingly, could have positive beneficial value to mankind if rightly used. Since “all the mysteries had not yet been revealed to” these Watcher and thus to men, but only “worthless ones,” it follows that we have very much to learn. According to Daniel 11:37-39, alchemy and vastly more physics are included in aspects of the mysteries to be restored and yet to be revealed.
There is evidence that Solomon had acquired some of this wisdom, particularly the alchemy of metals, and may indeed have produced the purer gold used in his temple from inferior metals.
“And Solomon . . . made silver and gold at Jerusalem as plenteous as stones.” While the wealth of gold may have only been the blessing of Yehuveh, increased through effective economic policies, it is equally viable that it was the product of alchemy. Daniel 11:37-39 makes it quite clear that these sciences will be the heritage of Yehuveh’s restored kingdom.  2 Chronicles 1:14-15. [Also, 2 Chronicles 9:27; 1 Kings 10:27-29.         Even though these Watchers knew only the “worthless” mysteries, “through these mysteries women and men work much evil on earth.” From the point where the mysteries of nuclear fission and fusion came into our possession, destruction and threat have spread. Untold numbers of lives have been destroyed and, if we have a right insight into
Zechariah 5, there is much more to come. Yet we know that nuclear “mysteries” can be used for benefit, as well. Thus the clear statement that these mysteries have been perverted through “the hardness of [the] hearts” of both the Watchers and men.

16:4 “There is no peace, saith Yehuveh, unto the wicked.” “Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.” Isaiah 48:22; 57:21; 3:11. [Also: Isaiah 48:22; 57:20-21; 65:13-15, 20; Psalms 1:3-5; 11:5-6; 28:4; 62:12; Proverbs 1:31; Ecclesiastes 8:13.]
