Twelve Tribes and the Zodiac
Twelve Signs of Zadok—the Righteous Ones

“Every man of the children of Israel
shall pitch by his own standard,
with the ensign
[Sign] of their father’s house:
far off about the tabernacle of the congregation
shall they pitch.”
Numbers 2:2.

A
s the tribes of Israel left Egypt, Yehuveh began instructing them, step-by-step restoring to them knowledge which had been suppressed or lost during the dreary years of their enslavement. Shortly after they crossed the Red Sea, Yehuveh organized their camp and travel sequence for moving.
Yehuveh gave Moses very specific directions for the location of each tribe. “And Yehuveh spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father’s house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.” “And the children of Israel did according to all that Yehuveh commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.” Numbers 2:1-2, 34.
        A specific
symbol or sign was associated with each tribe long before they left Egypt, for in Jacob’s final blessing to each son he spoke of their qualities and future. Judah was associated with a lion, Reuben with water, Dan with a serpent (and eagle), and Benjamin with the wolf. Ephraim was associated with oxen: “Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn.” These signs became the symbols on the flags posted by each tribal encampment and have been passed down even to our time as the heraldry of nations. Genesis 49:9, 4, 17, 27; Hosea 10:11.
        From
Numbers 2, four tribes led four sections of the nation when they moved. Two additional tribes were linked with each of these four lead tribes. When encamped one section was assigned to each of the four geographic directions around the sanctuary.

East: “On the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah; . . .
next unto him shall be the tribe of
Issachar; . . . then the tribe of Zebulun.” Numbers 2:3, 5, 7.

South: “On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben; . . . and those which pitch by him
                shall be the tribe of
Simeon; . . . then the tribe of Gad.” Numbers 2:10, 12, 14.

Center: “Then the tabernacle of the congregation . . . with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the
                camp.” “The
Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel.” Numbers 2:17, 33.

West: “On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim; . . . and by him shall be the tribe
                of
Manasseh; . . . then the tribe of Benjamin.” Numbers 2:18, 20, 22.

North: “The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north side; . . . and those that encamp by him
                shall be the tribe of
Asher; . . . then the tribe of Naphtali.” Numbers 2:25, 27, 29.
