				ead it again, Dad. Ple-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-ease.” Penny could always stretch that word out until it got results. Giving her one of his I’m-your-helpless-victim smiles, Dad opened Betty June and Her Friends again. Penny’s smile was well worth the early bedtime so they could enjoy a longer read!
“Once there was a little Gray Rabbit.                          “He lived all alone in a little grey house in the woods.”         Dad hardly needed the book. He remembered the story from the dozens of times his own mother had read it to him when he was small, and certainly he should have it memorized for all the times he had read it to Penny! It was a family classic, having belonged to his own grandmother and mother before he and Penny inherited it.                         “One day Gray Rabbit went for a long walk.                         “While he was away Betty June came through the woods.                         “She saw the little house.                         “‘What a fine house!’ cried Betty June. ‘I think I will stay here, but I cannot stay alone.’                         “Just then she heard someone calling her . . . . . .”         Dad glanced over the book to see if there was even a slim chance Penny was getting sleepy! But, of course not! The look in her bright sparkling eyes made it quite clear he’d better settle in for “a long winter’s read.”                         “‘. . . Then we will go,’ said Betty, . . . but Gray Rabbit looked sad.                         “‘I do not want to go,’ he said. ‘This little house is my home. I want to stay here.’                          “‘Even in winter?’ asked Betty.                         “‘Yes, indeed,’ said Gray Rabbit.                         “‘Then you shall stay,’ said Betty June. ‘Take good care of the house until I come again.’                         “She gave the door key to Grey Rabbit.                         “Then Betty and her friends went down the road and out of the woods.                         “Grey Rabbit opened the door and went back into his house.                         “‘I could not go away. I must take care of my house,’ he said, as he shut the door.”        Dad closed the book and pulled the covers up around Penny’s shoulders. “Good night, my precious! Sleep tight.” He leaned down to kiss her forehead. “Dream about Betty June in the rabbit house,” he teased.
