Turning to Physicians Physicians of Yehuveh’s appointing, like kings, judges or teachers, have a definite part in Yehuveh’s purposes for His people. Yehuveh bestows their talent and knowledge. Many times Yehuveh’s physicians are able to minister spiritually to the suffering more effectively than pastors and chaplains. Certainly they have a role to play in tending to the dying and to the dead. At the time of Jacob’s death, “Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.” Genesis 50:2. But Scriptures present cautions in regard to consulting physicians. Yehuveh wants us to employ their services at His direction and take their counsel under His guidance. Much of what is practiced in the name of medicine is harmful to the human body. Too often the ill and injured place their confidence in the physician and his medicine rather than in Yehuveh. When the physicians do not redirect this confidence to Yehuveh, they “make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.” Such healing, without heart conversion to Yehuveh and a re-education in His ways, is not healing. Isaiah 6:10. There are times when consulting a physician is the wrong things to do. “Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to Yehuveh, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.” Asa’s choice isn’t unlike many made today, and Asa is certainly not the only one to die for substituting human medicine and medical procedures for Yehuveh’s true healing. I pray we learn this lesson while we still can. 2 Chronicles 16:12-13. Natural Healing for Land and Water Natural remedies are Yehuveh’s gift to relieve our suffering. We have yet very much to learn here. He has also provided natural remedies for healing our land and water: “Yehuveh shewed him [Moses] a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet.” Decades later Elisha “went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith Yehuveh, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land. So the waters were healed unto this day.” On another occasion when food was scarce and someone had picked poisonous gourds and put them into the pot of stew, Elisha directed, “Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.” Exodus 15:25; 2 Kings 2:21-22; 4:41. When Natural Remedies Will Not Work No natural remedy can make a wrong course of action right. If we choose to disregard Yehuveh’s instructions for how to live our lives, no natural remedy can cover this destructive lifestyle with magical healing. We must recognize the absurdity of such a contradiction before searching long and hard to find one. Yehuveh cautions us against such presumption, “lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from Yehuveh our Elohim, to go and serve the gods [including lifestyle choices and medical care] of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood; and it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst: Yehuveh will not spare him, but then the anger of Yehuveh and His jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and Yehuveh shall blot out his name from under heaven.” Deuteronomy 29:18-20. The first and last natural remedy is always: “by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of Yehuveh doth man live.” Deuteronomy 8:3.
